Take These Steps and Start Living a Better Life Today

Most of us are experts on waiting for a better day or state of mind to start a healthy habit, make a difficult decision, or have a difficult conversation. The truth is, that better moment or feeling isn’t coming. The only moment you are guaranteed is the present one, and there is nothing like the present to take that next step. As that very wise Chinese proverb says, the best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, but the second best time is today. Go ahead, plant your own tree today, now. There is no better moment.

You probably have a list of things you really want to change about your life and yourself, ideally all at once. However, long-lasting change is sure to stick when attempted one step and one day at a time, so don’t start everything at once or you will soon become overwhelmed and quit.

When attempting change there is one aspect of our lives that we often overlook, a side to our lives that we should think about every day for a better perspective and a healthier state of mind. That aspect is gratitude. Do you ever deliberately think about all the good that surrounds you? In our world full of distractors and perfect images it’s easy to become fixated on our faults, flaws, and missing material possessions.

Regardless of what you’d like to be different in your life there are people, memories, circumstances, and places to be appreciated for all of the good things they contribute to your life. Especially when life brings difficult challenges that take you down dark paths with no light in sight, it’s the little things that make it worth getting out of bed for. Take a little time out of your day to be grateful for all the things you appreciate in your life, be they small or large.

  1. Practicing gratitude

One of the most meaningful ways to feel appreciative of your life is to write a list of things you’re grateful for. Really reflecting on the good parts of your life will make for a more positive outlook on all areas of your life.

  1. Get a head start on tomorrow

When you’re struggling with productivity or procrastination you’ll be more likely to start your day off right if you end the night before with a plan for the next day, as many successful people do. This is also a great way to include a daily gratitude practice where you jot down a sentence or two about what went well in your day or what you’re most grateful for.

  1. Tune in to something greater than yourself

What are you passionate about? Connect with something that gives you a sense that you’re a part of something larger than yourself. For some this may be volunteering, for others a hobby, or even a sport. Open yourself to new possibilities and new people.

  1. Stop negative mental chatter

There are many things in your life that you do not have control of. Your thoughts are not one of them. When you’re in the middle of berating yourself take a deep breath, stop, and find a slightly more positive thought. Talk yourself down from the proverbial edge. Is this stressful thing going to matter in five years, in one year? Would you allow a friend to talk to you this way? When you’re aware of your thoughts you can learn to better react to stressful situations.

  1. Make movement a part of your lifestyle

Sure, you’ve heard this a million times before, but exercise is not just good for your life expectancy, immune system, and energy levels, it is just as important for your mindset and mental strength. When your body moves you can feel its strength, its amazing capabilities, and you can better appreciate all it has done for you and the life it has allowed you to live. Exercise doesn’t automatically equal sweat – you can easily start a daily guided yoga session at home (see YouTube), which is a wonderful way to really stretch and tone without the need for equipment, space, or sweat.

Making better decisions and choosing a better life can start in the present moment. Start where you are no matter where you are. Start now.
